This year marks the 5th annual Wireshark Week webinar event produced by VIAVI Solutions. Each year these web sessions attract several hundred (800+) attendees who register for thousands of total sessions. They cover common troubleshooting scenarios with tips and strategies using Wireshark, by professional instructors who have taught at Sharkfest. It is VIAVI's largest lead-generating activity of the year.

Attendees will learn how the Observer Platform supports their Wireshark troubleshooting efforts - providing a more robust packet-capturing approach using GigaStor, coupled with a more accurate, automated analysis of data using Apex/Analyzer. Instructors literally spend 40 minutes showing how to tackle a subject with Wireshark, and 10 minutes doing the same task using Observer.

The Wireshark community labels itself the "largest audience of troubleshooters on the planet." They understand and value packets, but they may not realise the limitations of the systems they are using, or the ROI of investing in a paid solution. No one's telling them they can't use Wireshark - VIAVI is just pointing out the limitations and where a paid solution makes more sense or complements their current strategy.

In this free webinar series, you learn:

Introduction to Wireshark

Two sessions: Monday, 10. December 2018, 3:00pm GMT - Monday, 10. December 2018, 5:00pm GMT

Presenter:

Chris Greer - Packet analyst and founder, Packet Pioneer.

Overview:

Get started using the popular protocol analyser to capture packets on your network and troubleshoot user issues. Packet Pioneer Chris Greer shows you how to get up and running fast.

Learn to:

  • Determine how and where to capture

  • Configure profiles, custom columns, and colouring rules

  • Set up display filters and profiles for analysis

  • Analyse network traffic for troubleshooting

How to Fix "Slow"

Two sessions: Tuesday, 11. December 2018, 3:00pm GMT - Tuesday, 11. December 2018, 5:00pm GMT

Presenter:

Chris Greer - Packet analyst and founder, Packet Pioneer.

Overview:

Users often complain of slow networks, applications, and web connections. But is the network, application, or client the cause? Chris Greer will demonstrate how to locate and solve problems in the packets.

Learn to:

  • Understand the TCP handshake

  • Identify duplicate ACKs and retransmissions

  • Assess trace files for hidden TCP clues

Troubleshooting Performance in the Cloud

Two sessions: Wednesday, 12. December 2018, 3:00pm GMT - Wednesday, 12. December 2018, 5:00pm GMT

Presenter:

Paul Offord - Chief technical officer, Advance7.

Overview:

While the decision of moving to the cloud often occurs outside the network, supporting end-user issues often falls to the network team. When applications move to the cloud, it leaves engineers in the dark lacking visibility and insight to diagnose and resolve user issues. Paul Offord, CTO and troubleshooting expert, will share strategies for using Wireshark in cloud situations to regain control of performance.

Learn to:

  • Establish visibility for SaaS, IaaS (AWS and Microsoft Azure)

  • Investigate performance issues and delay in the cloud with real-world use case

  • Isolate issue between cloud and internal network

  • Validate user experience issues in the cloud

Monitoring and Assesing Encrypted Traffic

Two sessions: Thursday, 13. December 2018, 3:00pm GMT - Thursday, 13. December 2018, 5:00pm GMT

Presenter:

Ross Bargurdes - Network engineer and technical author, Bagurdes Technology.

Overview:

SSL/TLS is used every day, in nearly every conversation, with nearly every networked device. Learn how SSL/TLS works to encrypt traffic in this easy to understand breakdown of the protocol. Ross Bagurdes, network engineer and educator, will use Wireshark to illustrate details of SSL/TLS operation, observing each step of the handshake and how it leads to bulk encryption of data.

Learn to:

  • Recognise SSL/TLS encryption protocol and function basics

  • Use Wireshark to view the TLS handshake in operation

  • Understand public/private key encryption protocols and operations

  • Capture session keys and decrypt TLS sessions in Wireshark

Troubleshooting high-speed networks

Two sessions: Friday, 14. December 2018, 3:00pm GMT - Friday, 14. December 2018, 5:00pm GMT

Presenter:

Chris Greer - Packet analyst and founder, Packet Pioneer.

Overview:

When troubleshooting sporadic issues in high-speed environments, it can be difficult to successfully capture and resolve the problem. Chris Greer, professional packet analyst, presents a dual-pronged strategy to improve visibility and troubleshooting by understanding the best circumstances to use software and hardware capture and monitoring.

Learn to:

  • Identify the capture and analysis limits of a laptop

  • Understand how big packet haystacks can get on large networks

  • Efficiently filter through large packet haystacks to find root cause

  • Utilise powerful complementary metrics and analysis to streamline troubleshooting

Enjoy the freshest troubleshooting strategies and jaw-dropping hacks, especially for Wireshark users. Attend all five sessions and VIAVI will provide you with a certificate to showcase your learning.
