1550nm, multiple longitudinal mode, pulsed laser diode module delivering 0.02/1 mW of average output power in a benchtop format.

The picosecond pulsed diode lasers of the LDH-P series are compact, easy-to-use and need no alignment of the beam.

They can be pulsed at repetition rates up to 80MHz and generate pulse widths below 100ps at average pulse powers in the lower milliwatt range. They are available at wavelengths between 375 and 1550nm, with adjustable (average) power up to 20mW.

The laser heads of the LDH-P/D series are the ideal product for all applications that require picosecond pulses at a variable repetition rate. They are built around a variety of diode types, which allows these heads to be offered at many wavelengths with different power values and spectral widths. Typical diode types like Fabry-Perot (FP), Distributed Feedback (DFB), Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) or diodes with Fibre Bragg Grating (FGB) are used. Each laser head contains additional special driving electronics that are matched to the individual diode used.

These laser heads can only be driven either by the PDL 800-B, PDL 800-D, PDL 808 'Sepia' or PDL 828 'Sepia II' driver units.

Where two power adjustment levels are specified, these refer to the same laser head. The levels can be adjusted using the corresponding driver (PDL 800-B, PDL 800-D, PDL 808 or PDL 828). The 'Low' adjustment is the best choice for shortest pulses and is usually reached close to the lasing threshold. The 'High' adjustment is used to achieve highest pulse power at moderate pulse length and corresponds to the maximum intensity setting of the driver.

  • The PDL 800-B pulsed diode laser driver is a single channel driver for the picosecond diode laser heads or LEDs producing pulses at repetition rates from single shot to 80 MHz. The output wavelength can be changed quickly by simply changing the laser / LED head. The driver allows you to vary the output power of the connected laser head and provides a synchronization signal with each laser pulse.
  • The PDL 800-D pulsed diode laser driver is a single channel driver for the picosecond diode laser heads or LEDs producing pulses at repetition rates from single shot to 80 MHz (lowest rate 31.25 kHz). The output wavelength can be changed quickly by simply changing the laser / LED head. The driver allows you to vary the output power of the connected laser head and provides a synchronization signal with each laser pulse.
  • The PDL 808 'Sepia' multi-channel pulsed diode laser driver is a modular driver to work with up to 8 picosecond diode laser heads or LEDs. It can produce light pulses at repetition rates from single shot to 80 MHz. The parallel driver units can work in various operational modes to produce synchronous, delayed or sequential optical pulses.
  • The PDL 828 'Sepia II' is a completely computer controlled multi-channel pulsed diode laser driver designed to work with up to 8 picosecond diode laser heads or LEDs. The modular system is designed for various operational modes (bursts, sequences, ...) and allows also cw operation of the connected laser heads, which can e.g. be used for FCS. The main oscillator provides a widely adjustable repetition rate between 195 kHz and 80 MHz and can also be triggered externally. Additionally, each laser driver module also has its own internal oscillator with six fixed repetition rates to enable operation independent from the main oscillator module.

The power stability of the laser emission mainly depends on the diode temperature. If the temperature is constant, achievable by using a laser head with integrated temperature control, the output power fluctuations within 12 hours are less than 1% rms, 3% peak to peak. For uncooled laser heads, the output power fluctuations are slightly higher, but still low at around 3% rms. After switching on the lasers, all laser heads need several minutes to reach their stable operating conditions. However, these slight changes in output power are usually no problem for the majority of applications.

All laser heads emit a collimated elliptical beam with typical dimensions of 1.5 × 3.5 mm. They can be optionally fitted with single mode, polarisation maintaining single mode or multi mode optical fibres through appropriate fibre couplers. Different fibre connectors at the fibre output are available (FC/PC, FC/APC and SMA).

The laser heads are designed as compact and robust units. They are typically equipped with a thermoelectric cooler to stabilise the output. Picosecond pulsed diode lasers with wavelengths greater than 635nm can also be supplied without the cooler in an even more compact housing. All cooled laser heads have several threaded holes to mount the laser heads. The uncooled laser heads are very compact units with only 25mm outer diameter. They are available for picosecond pulsed laser heads with wavelengths greater than 630nm. OEM modules are also available for large scale manufacturing or system integration.

From 10 years of experience with data from several thousand laser diodes, the typical lifetime is found to be >2000 working hours for UV/blue laser heads and LEDs, >6000 working hours for red laser heads. These values relate to conditions where the laser head is driven in an appropriate manner at maximum settings of repetition rate and output power. Working at lower repetition rates and output powers increases the lifetime accordingly.

Narrow spectral bandwidth laser heads are also available, with wavelengths ranging from 772 nm to 1610 nm. The Spectral FWHM of these lasers is either <1nm, <0.5nm or <0.2nm, dependent on wavelength. Shorter pulse widths (~50 ps) are also available for 655, 670, 690, 785 and 830nm wavelengths. Please contact us for further details.
