Optical isolators are passive, non reciprocal devices that utilise the phenomenon of Magneto-Optic Rotation to isolate the source from reflections in an optical system. The heart of the device is based on a Faraday Rotator using, for example, Yttrium Iron Garnet-YIG (LPE and bulk) or Terbium Gallium Garnet-TGG single crystals.

These among other Faraday media have the ability, when in an appropriate magnetic field, to rotate the plane of linearly polarised light by an amount proportional to its length. YIG crystal is used for wavelengths from 1100 to 2100nm. TGG is utilised in several free space optical isolators for wavelengths between 500 to 1100nm.

Based on a Faraday Rotator made of Terbium Gallium Garnet single crystals offer many features and flexible design and provide superior performance when used with diode lasers, and many other sources within their wavelength ranges. These models can be used at normal incidence as input faces are angled. All units are supplied with a mounting collar which permits easy mounting and accurate alignment to the polarisation plane of a laser.

Dual Stage 1310 & 1550nm Isolators

  • Isolation (typ.) ≥75dB
  • Typical insertion loss ≤0.4dB
  • 4mm clear aperture

The I-x-UHP-4 are compact and simple to use optical isolators. They maintain a high isolation even when used with multi-line lasers or tuneable sources due to their wide bandwidth. Removable endcaps allow for easy cleaning of the polariser surfaces.

There is no provision for adjusting or tuning these models as they will never need adjustment. They offer excellent stability with respect to variations in temperature and wavelength.
